Q&A with Stu Gibson – Surf Photographer

Where were you born and raised?

Hobart, Tasmania

What inspires you to do what you do and why do you do it?

I love being in the ocean and I love taking photos, so I mixed the two and now that combo inspires me everyday, there is nothing better than swimming in big scary water!

Where did your journey as an artist begin?

For me it didn’t really start as art, I just wanted to take photos of waves and my bet mates surfing big waves, like really big stupid waves, so I did, once I mastered the equipment, then I suppose I looked at taking other images, more arty images, not just action.

How did you eventually get you where you are today?

I started shooting when big wave surfing was peaking, and free surfing was a big part of surfing, its died of slowly, but with that I’ve diversified myself and kept the dream rolling, as fun as the job is, it has its set backs and isn’t easy

What would you consider to be unique about your work compared to similar photographers, artists or designers?

I’m not going to lie there are a lot of people doing what I do, but being from Tasmania and growing up in the cold has helped me I think, not only do I have a niche market in Tassie but it breads you stronger and you can handle harsher environments to most. Nothing is easy in Tassie so when we go to amazing places and great waves the work becomes easy and I can shoot for longer.

What do you consider to be your favourite project to date?

For the last 3 years, I’ve been working with RipCurl and they have taken me to amazing places and done amazing things – I can’t thank them enough!

What tools or techniques do you use to produce your work?

Canon and nikon cameras, aqua tech water housings,
