BEST_SELFIE4x4Tanya Brown is a surface and textile patternista living happily by the sea on Long Island in New York.

She lives with her husband Chris and is a new mom to the sweet baby girl Heidi. She holds an A.A.S. degree in Surface and Textile Design from Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and a Masters degree in Education from Long Island University.

Tanya designs under the name Schatzi Brown. The word “Schatzi” is a German term of endearment, like sweetheart in English, and is a nicknamed bestowed upon her, by her husband.

Here at Blue Rapture we love colour and Tanya’s designs are defiantly filled with lots of colour.  Her work combines shapes and colours from her travels around the world, and being a surfer her self, you can definitely feel the strong boho, beach vibe her work conveys.

Q&A with Tanya Brown

Where were you born and raised?

I was born and raised on the South Shore of Long Island, New York.

What inspires you to do what you do and why do you do it?

I have been inspired by pattern, colors, shapes, others cultures, traveling and nature since I was a child. I have always loved being outdoors, especially at the beach. I have been drawing, painting, and doodling ever since I could remember. So I think it’s only natural for me to have found a way to marry the two.

Where did your journey as an artist begin?

My journey definitely began as a child. My mother was very crafty and an artist as well so it was only natural to follow.

I still get excited when I buy new art supplies or have a blank paper to fill.

How did you eventually get you where you are today?

Life is a journey for sure. I think any and all of my experiences have helped to shape who I am, form gong tort school, growing up by the beach, learning how to surf. Even making mistakes with careers, jobs, or anything else had helped to shape the point I am at now.

What would you consider to be unique about your work compared to similar photographers, artists or designers?

I think what helps me to stand out is that I still like to hand draw and paint all time. I have both traditional training in hand painted textiles design and computer graphic training. I try to find a balance between something computer generated with something create by hand.

What do you consider to be your favourite project to date?

My favorite project is me new line of surf leggings. I started creating patterns and designs to go on leggings that women can surf in, and use out side the water in gym as well. I have created 15 designs with more on the way. I like the idea of having stylish and functionally options to wear in the water. I am currently working on trying to create some rash guards with similar aesthetics to give women even more options in the water. It is my favorite project because it combines two of my passions; textile pattern design and surfing!!!

What tools or techniques do you use to produce your work?

I use watercolor, inks, markers and then photoshop and Illustrator software to create all my art.

Fun Facts:

Favourite Surfer: My favorite female surf would have to be Bethany Hamilton.  She is just an amazing spirit and example of how to be fearless, and overcome anything.

Favourite Surf Spot: My two favorite places are Hawaii and Costa Rica

Life idol: It’s hard to choose because there are many amazing people doing amazing things in different areas.

It might sound Cliche, but the Dali Lama is pretty awesome and always a good person to turn to when you need to be centered.

Favourite thing to do to relax: I like yoga, going for a run, bike, surf, going to the beach with my family, and a drawing.
